Things are moving quickly for incoming University of Arizona freshman Eric Oum, and that seems to be the way he likes it. Oum came to the United States from Cameroon only five years ago and graduated from Tucson's Palo Verde High School in May. And now, thanks to the KEYS Research Internship Program at the UA, he has lab experience as he embarks on a major in biomedical engineering.

Managing a heavy academic workload and serving as an undergraduate researcher at the University of Arizona, Shiana Ferng found that being a meditation facilitator helped provide the balance necessary to handle her daily responsibilities and engage in life beyond the classroom and lab.

UA Alumna Creates Possibilities

The KEYS to the Future Endowment will support internships for promising Arizona high school students interested science and engineering fields. The interns perform hands-on scientific laboratory research, and receive training in bioscience techniques and science communication skills.

10 Years Bringing Young Scientists To The UA

High school students have been involved this summer in intense laboratory and science literacy training under the tutelage of University of Arizona researchers through the Keep Engaging Youth in Science internship program.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the seven-week program — called KEYS for short — that is recognized as one of the state's premier pathways for developing science interests and skills in pre-college students.
